Children are impressionable and we have all been faced with the question of: should I play sports?

Sports are great for developing friendships, learning leadership skills, improving grades and giving students something to work toward. With all those benefits, you can see why so many students play sports.

Imagine the child who wants to be an NBA or an NFL athlete. Oftentimes when you ask children what they want to be when they grow up, one of those career choices is a player in either the NBA or the NFL.

Visualize a child sitting on the floor, in front of the television, eating his or her favorite meal. There’s an influential commercial about being the next big star in either the NBA, the NFL, or any popular sport. If that child has a strong desire for either sport, the belief in being THE athlete becomes real. The child begins to figure out ways to become the very athlete they see on television.

We all know the path to the pros is different for each sport and for each student athlete. Many children participate in organized sports in school and some participate in organized sports outside of school. Some are in sports from elementary to high school while many only enter sports while in high school. No matter the entry level or the route, no student should be denied the opportunity to participate in a sport.

For this reason, the younger children are, the more impressionable they become and the more impressionable they are when it comes to strong powers of influence. When they are older they begin the process of choosing their next athletic steps — whether to attend a college or a university to continue playing sports.

When deciding on a college, it's important that student athletes factor in the sports teams that are available at each school. As of 2011, more than 770,000 college scholarships with a value of over $6 billion had been given out. This shows how popular scholarships are with students who are looking for ways to fund their studies without incurring debt to pay for it.

Scholarships are wonderful opportunities for students to acquire funding without taking on any debt and a way for outstanding students to have their tuition costs paid or subsidized by companies and organizations that want to fund education, like us, Soul of the South Sports.

The possibilities are endless.

As offers for college scholarships continue growing every year, more and more students are flocking to apply for these opportunities. Scholarships are guaranteed free money towards your studies, which is a very attractive incentive for anyone who is taking out education loans.

So, if you aren’t playing in a sport, it’s not too late to start. And, there are scholarship opportunities outside of athletics. The important thing to know and remember is that whether you play sports or not, as long as you are in an educational position to go to school for free —- always choose free.

There’s nothing undecided about that, unless you’re undecided which school you want to attend, for free.
